Vishnu Jerome heads the Firm, which he co-founded in 2012. Vishnu was recognized as a “Leader in the field” of Banking & Finance by Chambers Asia Pacific for the Year 2014. Vishnu is a ranked lawyer for Banking & Finance in the Chambers’ Global Guide, since 2013. Vishnu’s principal practice areas are banking & finance, M&A, private equity and regulatory.Prior to founding Jerome Merchant & Partners, Vishnu Jerome was a partner with AZB & Partners, Mumbai where he worked for over seven years. Vishnu advises a diverse range of clients ranging from some of the largest fInancial institutions both in India and abroad, such as Citibank, Deutsche Bank, Kotak, Altico, KKR and domestic conglomerates such as Mahindra Lifespaces and Tata Motors.

Kalpana Merchant is a senior partner at the Firm. Kalpana has over thirty-five years experience as a solicitor and prior to Jerome Merchant + Partners, Kalpana was a partner at Kanga & Co and AZB & Partners, Mumbai. Kalpana’s expertise is in the area of real estate, dispute resolution and banking and finance laws with Kalpana being recognised as a leading individual in Real Estate and Construction by Legal 500 as ranked as a Tier 2 lawyer in the Real Estate Sector by Chambers and was ranked as one of the top 100 lawyers in India by Vantage Asia. Kalpana Merchant has decades of experience in managing large real estate practices and has an unparalleled coverage executing real estate transactions. Kalpana has a particular focus on sales and acquisitions, construction and corporate real estate services and the establishment and operations of special economic zones and integrated townships. Kalpana also advises private wealth clients on their estate planning strategies. Kalpana graduated with a degree in law from the Government Law College, Mumbai. Kalpana regularly advises HDFC, Cushman Wakefeld, D’Decor, Sakal group, DBS, the Trent Group and VPS.

Shameek Ray is a partner at the Firm. Shameek has extensive experience in advising both investors, and corporates in various financing transactions, ranging from hybrid securities, structured debt and preferred capital and equities, both on a private placement and public offer basis. Shameek has extensive experience in structured bond issuances (public issues and private placements, offshore and Indian) and on the financing of infrastructure projects in India, particularly in the roads and renewable energy space. Shameek also advises on transactions in the technology, data analytics, privacy and commercialisation of information technology properties. Prior to founding Jerome Merchant + Partners, Shameek worked at the Mumbai office of AZB. Shameek advises the Dalmia group, KKR, Kotak, Citrus Payment Solutions, Tata Motors and Citibank

Murtaza Somjee is a partner at the Firm. Murtaza is a dual qualified lawyer and advises clients in dispute resolution matters on pre-litigation strategies, contentious proceedings, and disputes representations before tribunals, arbitrators and superior courts in India. His practice covers a wide area of commercial matters including mergers & acquisitions, joint venture disputes, lender disputes, security enforcement, debt recovery, employment and human resources, contractual disputes, company matters and information technology and privacy related disputes, amongst others. In addition, along with our banking finance team, Murtaza complements the insolvency practice and advises investors and lenders in restructuring of their debt exposures to debtors, enforcing their rights under insolvency laws, advising sponsors on actions brought against them under insolvency laws, challenging proceedings or resolution plans which have been prejudicial to such sponsors and significant advisory work on insolvency laws in contentious and non-contentious matters. Prior to founding Jerome Merchant + Partners, Murtaza worked at the Mumbai office of AZB. Murtaza regularly advises SSG Capital, Videocon Group, Kotak, Q-Invest, Citibank, India Infoline and the Jetsynthesis group.

Sameer Sibal is a partner at the Firm. Sameer focuses his practice on representing corporations, investment funds and other institutions in a range of transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, buyouts, venture and growth capital investments and joint ventures, particularly in the financial services space. This is complemented by Sameer’s advisory and transaction work with fund sponsors and investors in connection with the formation of alternative investment vehicles. In addition, Sameer also works with financial institutions on their corporate debt transactions, including syndicated facilities (international and Indian), in the aviation, asset financing and acquisition area. Prior to founding Jerome Merchant + Partners, Sameer worked at the Mumbai office of AZB. Sameer, received his LL.M. from Columbia Law School where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. Sameer regularly advises India Infoline, ICICI, Infexion, Mahindra Lifespaces, NOVF, Aavishkar, SBI Mutual Fund and Kae Capital.
